How it works

  • The main image of the HEIC or HEIF file (the one the Photos app shows) is decoded on this device and saved as a JPG. The file is really converted, not just renamed.
  • Orientation stored in the photo (rotation and mirroring) is applied, so the JPG looks the way you see the photo.
  • Choose High, Standard or Smaller quality. If you change it after converting, only the JPG is recreated.
  • The saved file keeps the original name with a .jpg extension.

What is supported

  • Still images in HEIC or HEIF compressed with HEVC, such as iPhone photos. Photos stored as tiles (most iPhone photos) are supported.
  • If a file contains several images, only the main image is converted, and the page tells you so. The video part of Live Photos, bursts, and auxiliary images such as depth maps are not converted.
  • AVIF (AV1 compression), HEIF videos and compression other than HEVC are not supported; the reason is shown when you choose the file.
  • The file type is checked from its contents, not its extension. Files that are cut off are rejected instead of producing an incomplete image.

Colors and camera data

  • Colors are written as sRGB. HDR and wide-gamut (Display P3) photos may not keep their exact original colors.
  • Date taken, location and camera details are not included in the JPG.
  • Transparent areas become white, because JPG can’t store transparency.

Limits

  • One file at a time, up to 50 MB and 50,000,000 pixels (48-megapixel iPhone photos are included).
  • The saved JPG is at most 8,192 px per side and about 16.78 million pixels. Larger photos are scaled down, keeping the aspect ratio, so the device can handle them; the original and saved sizes are both shown.
  • Very large photos may fail to convert, depending on your device’s memory.

Software used

The conversion uses libheif-js 1.23.2, a WebAssembly build of libheif (HEIF decoding) and libde265 1.0.15 (HEVC decoding). All are distributed under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 (LGPL-3.0).

  • The first time you convert, about 1.5 MB (libheif.js and libheif.wasm) is loaded from this site. Your photo is not sent.
  • libheif.wasm is served unmodified as a separate file. The source code and build instructions are published at the links above.
