Mic and camera test

What you can check

• Microphone: an input level meter and values in dBFS show whether sound reaches the microphone you chose. If no sound comes in for 4 seconds or more, a tip suggests checking mute and the selected device.
• Record and listen: record up to 5 seconds and listen to your own voice. Nothing plays through the speakers while recording, so there is no feedback howl.
• Camera: shows the picture and the resolution and frame rate the browser received. You can turn the mirrored view on or off.
• Switching devices: if you have several microphones or cameras, choose one from the list. Device names appear after you allow access.

Reading the values

dBFS measures level relative to the loudest sound that can be recorded digitally (0). More negative means quieter.

These ranges are based on speech usually falling between -40 and -10 dBFS. They are not the actual loudness (sound pressure) and change with your device and system input volume.

What this tool can’t tell you

• It doesn’t diagnose hardware faults or meeting app settings. Even if sound and video come through here, a meeting app may still be set to a different device.
• The video quality a meeting app sends depends on the app and your connection.
• It can’t test speakers (output).

Saving and sending

Sound, video and recordings are only used on this page and are not saved or sent. They stop, and the recording is deleted, when you press stop or leave the page. Nothing is stored.
