Supported files

  • Word (.docx, .docm, .dotx), Excel (.xlsx, .xlsm, .xltx) and PowerPoint (.pptx, .pptm, .ppsx, .potx).
  • Old formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt) and password-protected files can’t be opened. Save the file again in Office first.
  • Macros, embedded objects and scripts are never run.

What is extracted

  • Images stored in the file are saved exactly as stored, without recompression.
  • Each image shows where it is used (slide number, sheet name, body, header and so on). Images that nothing refers to are marked “Not used in the file”.
  • When identical images appear more than once, copies are marked “Same image as …” and are not selected at first.
  • Formats that can’t be shown here, such as EMF, WMF and TIFF, are labelled and can still be saved.
  • Video and audio are not extracted. Images linked from outside the file are listed by address only; the links are not opened.

If Office shrank or compressed a picture when it was inserted, the original photo quality can’t be recovered.

Safety limits

  • Files up to 200 MB with up to 20,000 parts.
  • Up to 600 MB of unpacked images in total, and up to 2,000 images.
  • Files with a part that would become extremely large when unpacked (a “ZIP bomb”), or with unsafe names such as “..”, are not opened.

    Compare a before and after image side by side, overlaid or with a slider, and see which pixels differ, marked in colour and with boxes. Save the difference as a PNG.
