How to record

1. Choose the format (MP4 or WebM) and, if needed, sound. Sound is off at first.
2. Press “Choose what to record and start”, then pick a screen, window or tab in your browser’s sharing dialog.
3. While recording, the elapsed time and a “Stop recording” button stay at the bottom of the screen. Recording also stops if you press your browser’s “Stop sharing” or close the tab or window you chose.
4. After stopping, you can watch it right away. Save it if it’s good, or discard it and record again.

Formats

• Only formats this browser’s MediaRecorder can actually record are offered. Some browsers can’t record MP4 (for example, Firefox records WebM only).
• The file extension is decided from the first bytes of the recorded file (EBML for WebM, ftyp for MP4).
• Some players don’t show the length of WebM files, or can’t play them.

Sound

• Tab audio is included only if you choose to share audio in the sharing dialog. Depending on the browser and what you share (whole screen, window and so on), it may not be available; the page then tells you that only video is being recorded.
• Microphone: pressing “Also record the microphone” makes the browser ask for microphone access. While it’s in use, a level meter moves; “Don’t use the microphone” turns it off.
• With both turned on, they’re mixed into one audio track.

Limits

• Up to 10 minutes. The recording isn’t written to a file as it goes; it’s kept in this device’s memory, so longer recordings use more memory.
• As a guide, 10 minutes is about 197 MB (requested at 2.5 Mbps video and 128 kbps audio). The real size depends on what’s on screen and on the browser; while recording, the page shows the size received so far.

What it can’t do

• Record protected content (such as streaming services). It can’t be recorded or appears black, and this tool doesn’t work around that.
• Record the screen on phones (most phone browsers don’t support it).
• Guarantee system sound, pause, edit, or convert to MP4.
• Record only part of the screen after you share the whole screen. Choose just the tab or window you need.

Your data

The recorded video and sound stay inside this page and are never sent to a server or any third party. Unless you save it, it disappears when you close the page.
