Video to GIF

How to make a GIF

1. Choose a video and enter the start and length (up to 10 seconds) of the part you want, in seconds. You can also pause the video and use that position as the start.
2. Choose the width (240–640 px; never larger than the video), frames per second (5, 10 or 15) and playback (loop or play once).
3. Press “Create GIF”. The part is captured frame by frame and turned into a GIF, which plays on the page and can be saved.

What the GIF contains

• No sound and no transparency.
• A GIF frame can use at most 256 colors. Colors are chosen again for each frame, but smooth gradients may still show bands.
• Frame times are stored in hundredths of a second. At 15 fps, 7, 6 and 7 hundredths are combined so the total length stays right.
• Each frame uses the video frame the browser considers closest to that time, which is not always exact to the frame.
• The aspect ratio of the video is kept.

Limits

• Up to 10 seconds, and at most 20 million pixels in total (frames × width × height). For example, 640 × 360 at 10 fps allows up to 8 seconds.
• Creation stops if the GIF grows beyond 50 MB.
• Videos up to 4 GB. Whether a video can be opened depends on your browser and the video’s format (codec).

Your data

The video and the GIF are processed in this browser on your device and are not uploaded or stored. Only the width, frames-per-second and playback settings are saved on this device.
