How characters are counted

  • Characters are counted as they appear on screen: each visible character counts as one. Combined emoji (such as 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦) and letters with combining accents also count as one.
  • Each line break counts as one character. “Excluding line breaks” does not count them.
  • Spaces are regular spaces, full-width spaces and tabs.
  • Lines are the number of parts separated by line breaks. If nothing follows the last line break, no extra line is counted.
  • Bytes (UTF-8) is the size of the text when saved as UTF-8. A line break counts as one byte (LF).

This tool does not count words. Results may differ from the rules used by specific services such as social networks.

Older browsers can’t detect how characters are grouped and may count emoji as more than one character. If so, a note appears below the results.
