Supported subtitles

  • SRT (.srt) and WebVTT (.vtt) text files in UTF-8. If the first line is “WEBVTT”, the file is read as WebVTT; otherwise as SRT.
  • Timestamps look like “00:00:01,000” in SRT and “00:00:01.000” in WebVTT (hours optional). Times over one hour are supported.
  • If a timestamp is invalid or a cue ends before it starts, loading stops and the line number is shown. Cues are never dropped silently.
  • Cues that overlap the previous cue in time are counted and kept as they are.

Shifting

  • Every cue’s start and end move by the same number of seconds, later or earlier, with millisecond precision.
  • Timestamps inside WebVTT text (karaoke-style “<00:00:01.500>”) are shifted too.
  • If shifting earlier would put any cue before 0 seconds, the result cannot be saved; the largest possible earlier shift is shown.
  • Different shifts for different cues (fixing a speed difference) are not supported.

What changes when converting

  • WebVTT → SRT: cue settings such as position, NOTE, STYLE and REGION blocks, header text and non-numeric IDs cannot be stored in SRT. They are removed and counted. Character references such as &amp; are turned back into characters. WebVTT-only tags such as <v> are kept and counted.
  • SRT → WebVTT: SRT coordinates are removed. <font> tags and position codes such as {\an8} are kept and counted. A “<” or “&” that is not part of a tag, and “–>”, are written as character references so they display the same.
  • When saving as SRT, cues are numbered from 1.
  • The words of the subtitles are never changed. Subtitle text is shown on the page as plain text, never as HTML.

Saving

  • Line breaks (LF, CRLF or CR) and the BOM follow the file you loaded. The encoding is UTF-8.
  • The file name keeps the original name with the new extension (for example movie.srt → movie.vtt). Pasted subtitles are saved as subtitles.srt or subtitles.vtt.

Limits

Up to 2,000,000 characters, 6 MB per file and 20,000 cues. The list shows the first 300 cues; saving and copying always include all of them. Burning subtitles into video, generating subtitles and translation are not supported.
